AIRFIX 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IXc – A Spitfire FR.IX Conversion Build

What is a Spitfire FR.IX? The most heavily armed reconnaissance Spitfires were a small number of FR (Fighter Reconnaissance) Mk IXs. These carried the standard guns of the Mk IX fighter, with one obliquely mounted F.24 camera and were used for low to medium level reconnaissance. Decal Rating: Overall Rating: 9 / 10 (I only used the D-Day Stripes decals from the kit, but they went on very well. All other decals came from various Xtradecal After Market decal sheets.) I also used the cockpit parts and the canopy from the otherwise totally useless Italeri Spitfire Mk.IX kit, plus an old style Airfix pilot. All other parts are kit original.     @mixindave1 Well, thanks to James May, perhaps a few has discovered the hobby, and will carry on building.. at the moment the hobby is strong, I think these days maybe more people discover it when they’re slightly older. These days there’s such a variety of kits on the market compared to how it was when I first started.. :)

    @arin536 I use the Squadron White Putty and Vallejo Plastic Putty, both of which are very good.. in my opinion.. :) And they’re not very expensive either.. :)

    you fill the gaps looks like very fine after sanding. what type of filler that you use for your model?

    Definetely enamels… but I do use acrylics for figure painting, and for some German planes, as the Xtracrylics range have a great selection of accurate Luftwaffe colours.. :)

    i’m guessing the painting with a brush requires thinner paint, but not too thin so it runs. Is it a case of finding a happy balance, I have tended to use enamels…not really used acrylics, whats your prefered choice?

    I thought I’d try it, but it is VERY brittle, have had to redo it after a test prod.. Ouch, did I say prod?? Just the thought of it hurts.. :)

    I don’t get on with Decalfix.. but maybe it will work for you! I would apply the decals while it’s still wet, and then add some more around the edges of the decal, that’s what I do with the ‘Klear’ anyway.. :) Good luck with it.. :)

    It doesn’t show on the photos, but the lens / cover over the camera hole was made by adding a drop of Johnsons Klear, leaving it to dry over night.. It works really well!! :) :)

    Very nice model I really like that aircraft. I also noticed you had a spitfire t-shirt as well. The air base where I live they sell their unit t-shirts so I will have my wife pick up a A-10 shift before my next build. I look forward to your next kit.
